Assen 2006

I arrived in Assen for my 3rd World Championships about 80% fit after suffering a quite serious hip injury that hampered me all season. My form had been indifferent in both club and discus going into the games. Indeed I was sure of competing in the discus until a week before I travelling to Holland.

It proved a step too far when I came a disappointing 5th in the discus, throwing a fairly modest 13.91m. It left me feeling empty and with lots of uncertainties going into the club. Silver was very much within my grasp which made it harder to take.

In the club I knew it would be close as it was combined on points. I was fairly confident of my form as I knew I'd been throwing well. My first throw proved to be my best, which is unusual for me as I tend to build my series. I was happy with my consistency though, I think it's the first time I've had 3 three throws over 32m in the same competition. Watching Radim go last was nerve wrecking but he was about a metre off and I won with 32.56m.
