Birmingham 1998

My first World Championships was held in my home country and I went into it full of confidence having broken the world record in the club the previous year. I was also selected for the discus which I had only started doing the previous year as well.
However I had problems that disrupted my preparation, in September 1997 I underwent surgery on my left adductor muscle to free my hip up which was being pulled out of joint. Just as I was getting over the operation, in early 1998 I broke my left little toe - catching it on the sofa whilst going to answer the door. It was a bad break - I sheared it off - and took ages to heal.
So all year my distances were up and down, I was last to throw in the club and I went into the final round in second place and with no confidence. I manage to win by a few centimetres with my last throw but it was way off my best - 25.29m, and was the biggest scare of my career.
I came a disappointing 6th in the discus with 11.34m - I can't find any results online so you'll just have to believe me.
